Matondo Kuntima's artwork
Matondo Kuntima
I was born and raised in the UK. I am a British artist with parents from the Caribbean. Perhaps it’s from this culturally rich background that instilled a passion for exploring the richness of different artistic processes, incorporating pattern and colour.
I graduated from De Montford University with a BA Hons in Fine Art, specialising in sculpture and printmaking. I immediately embarked on a diverse career that included working extensively in advertising and lecturing at various universities and colleges.
Throughout my career, I have always been fascinated by the multidisciplinary approach of using hand and digital techniques collectively with colour and pattern. This fascination led me to embrace digital techniques and in so doing I have always encouraged my creative media students to explore the possibilities of digital media alongside traditional hand methods.
A pivotal moment in my artistic journey occurred during a visit to Ghana and The Gambia. I was inspired by the beautifully printed fabrics, landscapes and the daily lives of the people I encountered and observed. I began combining multidisciplinary techniques with and against vibrant backdrop of scenes depicting people in their everyday activities.
I want viewers to see the reflection of the rich fabrics, elegant gaits, and expressive gestures that define the daily lives of those observed. The gold crowns depicted in my images represent the inherent nobility and dignity of these individuals.
I like working with large format canvases to showcase details of methods used focusing on the mastery of digital, traditional print and paint methods; taking viewers on a visual journey through captivating scenes of everyday life and celebrating the beauty that can be found in the simplest moments.
I can and have reduced canvas sizes but I do feel that each artwork has its best or natural size.
I have completed commissioned artwork on request and have enjoyed the process of collaborating with clients.
